DELTA-8 FAQ

New to Delta-8 THC? No problem! Below you’ll find answers to some common questions that are frequently asked about Delta-8 THC.

Delta-8 vs Delta-9

Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC are both cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, but they have some small, but key differences.

A basic introduction, is that Delta-8 is an “analog” of Delta-9, meaning it has a similar molecular structure but with some slight variations. It’s gone largely unnoticed due to its miniscule concentration in cannabis. However, the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill sparked an unprecedented interest in the compound, which we discuss more in depth a bit later.

When it comes to potency, Delta-8 is known to be less psychoactive than Delta-9, making it a great option for those who want to experience the benefits of cannabis without feeling overly intoxicated.

Legality wise, Delta-8 is federally legal as long as it contains less than 0.3% delta 9 THC by dry weight. This means that products containing delta 8 must be below this threshold to stay compliant with federal law, otherwise it would be classified as marijuana.

Delta-8 vs Delta-9 Molecular Structure

The main differences between Delta-8 THC and Delta-9-THC stem from their different pharmacokinetic properties and how they interact with the ECS system.

Both of the molecular structures have the double bond in them, as well as similar bonding methods when it comes to interacting with our endocannabinoid receptors.

However, the key contrast that lies between them boils down to their atomic structure. Although they both contain eight carbons (C), they differ by one carbon atom at position 9. The difference is small, but that’s the world of chemistry!

Delta-8 vs Delta-9 Effects

The effects of Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC flower are similar, but there are some key differences.

To start, Delta-8 is known to be less psychoactive than Delta-9, meaning it produces a more mellow and calming effect. It also has a lower affinity for CB1 receptors in the brain, which can lead to a more clear headed experience.

Delta-9 on the other hand is known to produce more intense effects that can be felt quickly and last longer. It also has a higher affinity for CB1 receptors in the brain, which can lead to an increased sense of euphoria and relaxation.

Delta-8 vs HHC

Now we’re getting into the fun stuff. If you’re familiar with alt cannabinoids, you’ve probably heard of HHC.

These two cannabinoids are commonly compared head to head due to their likeness in effects, which is fair, since HHC and Delta-8 are actually pretty similar.

HHC and Delta-8 THC are said to be among the closest to delta-9 THC out of the popularized alternative cannabinoids that have recently been commercialized, however, there’s two core differences that contribute to the uniqueness of each of these cannabinoids.

The first being the molecular structure. When looking at the molecular structure of Delta-8 THC, we can see that the double bond is on the 8th position of the molecule, vs the 9th position in Delta-9 THC.

Now, when it comes to HHC, compared to being synthesized from CBD (Like Delta-8), HHC is processed directly from Delta-9 THC molecules. This is done through a process called hydrogenation. This process takes the Delta-9 THC molecule, breaks down the double bond, and replaces it with hydrogen molecules. The resulting molecule is strikingly similar to Delta-9 THC in terms of structure.

HHC Flower and Delta-8 THC flower, in conclusion, are also fairly similar when it comes to the effects due to the said similarity. Although there are many differences between Delta-8 THC and HHC, the core difference is that both molecules are said to reveal psychoactive effects, with HHC having more of the euphoric and slightly more cerebral leaning traits that are reminiscent of delta-9 thc. It’s said that delta-8 has effects that will last a bit longer with an emphasis on sedative sensations.

What is Delta-8 THC?

Delta-8 THC is a minor cannabinoid that is processed from CBD found in hemp plants, usually through a process somewhat similar to decarboxylation.

Naturally found in cannabis, it is similar in structure to delta-9 THC, the main psychoactive compound in marijuana.

The difference between the two is in the placement of a double bond in their chemical structure – delta-8 has the bond on the 8th carbon chain, while delta-9 has it on the 9th.

The Origins of Delta-8 THC

In the cannabis industry, a lot of people are aware of this. If you may (or may not!) recall, there was a CBD and Hemp boom around the time of the 2018 Farm Bill being enacted. During this time, there was a huge oversupply of CBD derived from hemp flower in the US that caused the price of CBD and hemp related products to go on a downward trend.

Around this time, companies started experimenting with ways that they could turn the excess CBD into D8 THC as a way to recoup their margins, and after utilizing older synthesizing methods previously used in the past, they had found a way to effectively utilize the excess CBD and produce delta-8 THC at large scales that are commercially viable in the cannabis industry.

Effects of Delta-8 THC vs CBD

When it comes to the effects of these two chemical compounds on your body, although they work in similar ways, the effects are fairly different.

Because they are both cannabinoids, these compounds both work by binding with receptors located throughout your body — mainly in your brain and central nervous system – called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

In response to activation of these receptors, many have said that your body can react by experiencing feelings such as relaxation, pain relief (including migraine headaches), a desire to sleep, increased appetite, or even a feeling of being “high”, depending on the cannabinoid that binds to them.

It is said that the therapeutic effects of each of these two alone are also similar, and delta-8 THC is especially effective for stimulating appetites, similar to marijuana, but of course more research needs to be done.

The key difference between the two is how they bind. It is reported that they provide similar effects, but delta-8 THC and flower products bring psychoactive effects that are remnant of delta-9 THC, but isn’t present in products like CBD flower or CBG Flower, which are known for there therapeutic uses in comparison.

The main takeaway here is that although similar to both CBD and delta-9 THC, the use of Delta-8 THC is different from other cannabinoids.

Delta-8 Laws & Safety

Is Delta-8 THC Legal?

Yes!

It is a naturally occurring cannabinoid derived from hemp, which was legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill.

As such, it’s not prohibited under federal law, and there’s actually several states where you can legally possess and consume Delta-8 THC products without any issues as well.

However, state laws are changing on a frequent basis, resulting in somewhat of a grey area regarding the legality of the popular cannabis product.

At the time of writing, the selling of Delta-8 THC products has been banned or restricted in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Washington.

If you want to purchase it online, be sure to get it from reputable sellers who conduct third party testing, and double check your local laws.

At CBD Hemp Direct we also focus on ensuring your products are shipped in appropriate heat sealed packaging for freshness and to retain scent.

Is Delta-8 Safe?

As such, when looking at the safety profile of Delta-8 THC, most of the available evidence seems to come from personal experience, which has been trending in the positive direction thus far.

If you do decide to try it, make sure to start with small doses and gradually increase until you reach the desired effect.
